Espinavell Mulat Sorting
A traditional market for Breton-breed horses that spend the summer grazing on the Rojà mountain in the French Conflent, on the slopes of Canigó. Farmers from Molló have kept grazing rights on these now-French lands since the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659. On 13 October, Saint Edward's Day, the animals come down to the Planes d'Espinavell in mid-morning, and in the afternoon the mares are separated from their foals, known as mulats. A commercial fair selling handcrafted products runs all day. On the afternoon before, Sunday 12 October, herders gather the livestock on the Espinavell mountain.
