A Sixth Part of the World
Cineteca Madrid screens Shestaya chast mira, Vertov's film commissioned by the Soviet state trading company. Conceived as propaganda celebrating the USSR, it unfolds as a symphony of cultures, landscapes and faces from across the country, and as an experiment in the poetic use of intertitles. Filmmaker Warren Sonbert saw its editing as a model for his own work, favouring emotion and ambiguous connections between images over a fixed meaning. The screening is introduced by Francisco Algarín and Carlos Saldaña, curators of the series. Paid admission.
