"Neighbourhood Schools Of Bizkaia. A Decisive Educational And Cultural Initiative"
From 1 to 21 December 2026, Zelaieta Zentroa in Amorebieta-Etxano hosts a free exhibition organised by the Biblioteca Foral de Bizkaia. It recalls the more than 125 neighbourhood schools that the Diputación Foral de Bizkaia set up between 1919 and 1937 in rural and industrial areas far from urban centres. The project aimed to bring public education to everyone and to support the use of Basque in teaching Basque-speaking children, helping over 9,000 boys and girls escape illiteracy. Through objects, period graphic material, recreations and historical documentaries, the exhibition highlights the schools' impact on Basque society and culture.
