"From the Revolution to Frankenstein: Sulphur Veil: Volcanoes, Climate and the Course of History"
A talk by geologist Koen Van den Driessche at the Museo Zumalakarregi in Ormaiztegi on how distant volcanic eruptions shaped European life and culture, from the fate of peasants to the inspiration of a writer in Switzerland. He will explain the so-called "Science of the Veil": large eruptions that send millions of tonnes of sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere, 20 to 25 kilometres up, and how geologists, climatologists and historians reconstruct these events by studying polar ice cores. 15 October 2026, 18:30 to 19:30. Free admission with prior registration.
