Permanent exhibition: "Exhibition in tribute to the victims of forced labour"

The Basque Railway Museum in Azpeitia hosts a permanent exhibition honouring the prisoners forced to work as slave labour during the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship. From 1937, thousands of prisoners of war, and later ordinary convicts, rebuilt towns and built roads, reservoirs and railways. The exhibition focuses on the penal detachments of Gernika and Bermeo, which helped rebuild Gernika after the bombing and extend the railway from Sukarrieta to Bermeo, working in harsh conditions far from their home regions. Originally a temporary exhibition in Bermeo organised by APECPV-EHPIKE and the Basque Government, it will interest anyone concerned with historical memory.
