"Bilbao", sculpture by Richard Serra
The Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao displays Bilbao (1983), the sculpture Richard Serra created on site for the exhibition Correspondencias. 5 arquitectos, 5 escultores. Made of two steel ingots weighing over 9 and 7 tonnes, resting one on the other in a seemingly unstable balance, the work explores mass, weight and equilibrium. After years in Madrid, it has joined the museum's collection through a donation by the grandchildren of Martín García-Urtiaga and Mercedes Torrontegui. Open Wednesday to Monday, 10:00 to 20:00; closed on Tuesdays.
